The Social Documentary Network is a global network of people focused on the power of visual storytelling related to the issues and concerns of our world today.  I first learned about SDN when I attended a talk given by the founder, Glen Ruga, in Newburyport several years ago. If you want a taste of documentary photography today, this is a good website to check out.  Photographers from around the world have portfolios. The big challenges of war, disease, environmental change, etc.  are featured but also the joys and celebrations of everyday life. They also offer online courses,  a print magazine, and monthly ZOOM gatherings where a particular documentary photographer presents.  Check it out at www.socialdocumentary.net.
